Children prone to swine flu virus
Aug. 31, 2009 – Children were 14 times more likely to be sickened by swine flu than adults 60 and older, the age group that is typically the most at risk for influenza. 


Westco Wins Right to Process Chickens in Quebec
August 27, 2009- The New Brunswick Court of Appeal has ruled that Westco Group Inc. has the right to take its chickens out of New Brunswick and have them processed in Quebec.

Letter to White House on Antibiotic Use in Livestock
August 20, 2009- A coalition of 20 organizations related to animal agriculture, including the American Farm Bureau and the American Veterinary Medical Association, sent a letter today to Melody Barnes, assistant to President Barack Obama for domestic policy, regarding the on-farm use of low-level antibiotics in livestock and poultry.

August 20, 2009- A report commissioned by the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute (CAPI), Building Convergence: Toward an Integrated Health and Agri-Food Strategy for Canada, makes the case for linking agriculture and health policy in Canada.

Hog Plan Ignores Conflicting Policies: Report
August 20, 2009 - A special George Morris Centre report is critical of the federal government’s assistance plan for the Canadian hog industry.   The report’s authors argue that the assistance package, announced August 15th, does not account for policy failures that will only sow the seeds of future challenges and additional requests for support.  Policies for red meat are not well coordinated with those for biofuel or management of trade with the US.


CFIA Enhances Animal Disease Reporting
August 19, 2009 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) will provide a comprehensive view of Canada's animal health status by posting to its website all detections of federally reportable diseases. Information will be updated monthly.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria persist in chicken manure
August 18, 2009- A study from Johns Hopkins University has found that large piles of aging chicken manure to be used as fertilizer on farm crops can house bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics.|READ MORE
