Agriculture Minister Ronald Ouellette to be illegal. In a press release distributed today, the companies say that by enacting Bill 81, Ouellette is seeking to prevent interprovincial trade, which is a matter within the jurisdiction of the federal government. Two New Provincial Ag Ministers January 20, 2010- Both Alberta and Ontario have new agricultural ministers this week. Jack Hayden was named Alberta's new minister of agriculture and rural development, and Ontario has named Carol Mitchel minister of agriculture, food and rural affairs. Farmers Calling for Investment in Ag Research January 22, 2010- Farmers across Canada are uniting to form Farmers for Investment in Agriculture (FIA), to demand greater investment in agronomic research from the federal government. Grand River Poultry Closure January 22, 2010-Grand River Poultry has announced that it is closing it's plant in Paris, Ont. It will move production from the plant to a second plant in Belleville. FCC Releases Optimism in Ag Survey Janaury 21, 2010- Farm Credit Canada (FCC) has released it's 2010 optimism in agriculture survey. Results show that despite uncertainty in the industry, more than half of all respondents (55 per cent) remain optimistic about the future of agriculture. Tyson Settles Class Action Suit January 13, 2010 - Tyson Foods Inc. has settled the consumer class action brought over it's "Raised Without Antibiotics" advertising campaign. "Greener" Burning of Poultry Litter Being Examined January 11, 2010 - Chicken manure releases nitrogen oxide when burned to make electricity, which is causing troubles for some energy companies. Research is being conducted to determine whether there is a more "green" option for disposing of poultry litter by converting the non-edible biomass into fuel through fermentation. Mandatory COOL Violates Trade: AMI January 10, 2010 - The American Meat Institute (AMI) told the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative that mandatory country-of-origin labeling (COOL) violates the United States’ international trade obligations for many reasons and that the U.S. must honor these obligations. Chicken Waste as Power for Homes, Offices January 8, 2010- The International Business Times reports that a new company from Nevada, United States says it has developed a technology that uses animal waste from poultry farms across the state to power homes and offices. |
