PIC Update: What’s New in Poultry Welfare?
The welfare of the birds was approached from every angle at our annual PIC Research Day on May 11. Poultry welfare specialists from academia, industry and government spoke about the latest research, poultry care programs, and welfare assurance schemes.


Reducing Waste
Trace minerals are usually added to a modern poultry diet in such small amounts that many people forget how important they are to the maintenance, health, and performance of a commercial flock. Although acute or visible mineral deficiencies might seem to be a thing of the past, if the diet lacks a particular essential mineral or a set of them, the potential for very characteristic mineral deficiencies and problems for the poultry operation exists.



Understanding the Big Picture of Land Use
Farmers across Canada are currently testing the initial version of “Holos,” a whole-farm greenhouse gas emissions modelling software program developed by a large team of Agriculture and Agri-food Canada (AFFC) scientists.


Chicken Waste as Power for Homes, Offices
January 8, 2010- The International Business Times reports that a new company from Nevada, United States says it has developed a technology that uses animal waste from poultry farms across the state to power homes and offices.

During the last 20 years, the poultry industry throughout the world has been engaged in major changes in the management of its flocks. Much of this is directed at how the flocks are housed and managed in respect to so-called “humane treatment” goals with emphasis on flock behaviour as a means of evaluating systems.


Doha Isn’t Dead
There is increased likelihood of a trade deal at the WTO, Canada’s former agricultural trade negotiator and an expert in international trade told poultry producers in Smithville, Ont., in August.
