January 22, 2009- Nova Scotia's ACA Co-operative is closing one of two poultry processing plants in Kings County and cutting more than 300 jobs.
CEO Ian Blenkharn says the choice was either make major changes to the business model or risk losing the entire operation.
The cuts include the layoffs of 75 union employees at ACA and the permanent loss of 40 non-union A-C-A and Eastern Protein Foods employees and 187 Eastern Protein union positions.
Eastern Protein, an ACA subsidiary in Kentville, which the co-operative says lost 1.8 (m) million dollars in 2008, is closing permanently and filing for creditor protection.
Kentville Mayor David Corkum says the news is both sudden and devastating to the community.
Economic and Rural Development Minister Murray Scott says his department has requested a meeting with ACA to determine what can be done to help the situation.
