Mojtaba Yegani Coccidiosis: what is next?
Written by Mojtaba Yegani
Nov. 13, 2009 – We all know that coccidiosis is an important disease of commercial poultry farms all around the world.  This disease causes impaired feed efficiency and reduced weight gain, mortality, and increased susceptibility to other diseases including necrotic enteritis. (1, 2)

We also know that elimination of this parasitic disease by common management practices is very difficult, if not impossible.  Anti-coccidial drugs have been used for many years in the poultry industry in order to deal with this disease. Development of resistance to drugs and also recent moves toward restricting use of drugs in poultry diets has put pressure on the industry to look for alternatives. (3)

Vaccination is currently an option available to the poultry industry. (4) What do you think of using vaccines to prevent coccidiosis?  Do you think that the industry can only use vaccines and terminate use of anti-coccidial drugs?  What about a combination of vaccines and anti-coccidial drugs?

Please share your experiences here.

When you using a vaccine you are able to know when the pressure in NE or Cocci will be present, that mean that you could using some other solution for prevent this pressure in the same time. It's true that we have a resistance to drugs available, it's why we make some rotation in the production, but please think about also some natural solution, in extract of plants, essential oils and organics acids, a synergy of natural ingredient could help you to target same objective with very similar application price, we working in ABF and organics production since more than 5 years and we see less resistance with Natural products. A good management of breeding is also essential, lighting, temperature, humidity, air pressure, ... are also very important in your success. David -Synergie Eurobec Inc.
