Chicken farmers to shrink national flock by 12 per cent

Move comes as coronavirus takes toll on Canada’s food supply chain.

The Chicken Farmers of Canada is reducing the size of this summer’s flock amid fears that the coronavirus could cripple the industry’s ability to process meat.

Under supply management, the CFC’s board of directors controls how many chickens the country will produce every eight weeks — which is the same time it typically takes to raise a chicken.

Demand for chicken has dropped following mass closures in the restaurant industry.

Meantime, COVID-19 outbreaks at Canadian meat processing plants have also stoked fears that farmers may raise more chickens than the industry will be able to handle.
