Feb. 22, 2008, Saskatoon – Saskatchewan farmers will be digging deeper into their pockets for crop insurance this year, but the province says they'll be getting more coverage.

Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud says premiums paid by farmers will rise about $2 an acre.

But under the 2008 Saskatchewan crop insurance program, coverage is also increasing to $128 an acre from about $86 an acre last year.

Bjornerud says forecast market prices have increased significantly for many crops and the changes to crop insurance
reflect that.

Coverage for gopher damage is also being made permanent after a successful pilot program in 2007.

Producer groups say it was `a slam dunk' that additional coverage was needed, but they're still waiting for a review of the overall crop insurance program.
