USDA lowers corn harvest projection
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has slightly lowered its projection for the size of this year's corn crop for a fourth straight month. The USDA released its monthly crop report Thursday in which it estimates that farmers will harvest 10.71 billion bushels of corn. That's down from last month's estimate of 10.73 billion bushels.

Canada officially joins TPP talks
Canada has officially joined Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade talks in early December of this year, which could result in major changes to Canadian dairy, egg and poultry farmers. U.S. dairy and poultry groups have voiced opposition to Canada joining the TPP talks and want Canada to put all aspects of trade (including supply management) on the table for negotiation. This has worried dairy, egg and poultry farmers that changes or complete removal of supply management could happen, despite the government's assurance.

Canadian agriculture output increasing, according to BMO study
A report by the Bank of Montreal says Canada's real agricultural output is on track to increase 7.5 per cent this year, laying fertile ground for the sector's performance heading into 2013. David Rinneard, the bank's national manager of agriculture, calls the rebound impressive and says improved demand, prices and growing conditions have been a clear boon to the industry.

CBHEPA young farmer program recipients hosted by Aviagen
Aviagen recently hosted the three young poultry farmers who are the recipients of the 2012 Canadian Broiler Hatching Egg Producers Association's (CBHEPA) young farmers program at the company's facilities in Huntsville, Alabama. This year's CBHEPA young farmer program recipients are Ben van Steenbergen from Hepburn, Saskatchewan, Timothy van Steenbergen from Hepburn, Saskatchewan, and James Malda from Barrhead, Alberta.
