London Poultry Show cancelled

The 2015 London Poultry Show has been cancelled due to concerns over avian influenza. The decision was announced late last week by the Poultry Industry Council and the Western Fair District. >> Read full article

Update on Ontario H5N2

The Feather Board Command Centre is pleased at the effectiveness of the containment and risk management procedures that have been put in place. FBCC staff are meeting regularly with all sectors of the Ontario poultry industry to manage operational issues as they arise and has been working cooperatively and effectively with the CFIA to ensure as many safeguards as possible have been put into place to mitigate the possibility of the disease spreading beyond the initial index farm site. >> Read full article

H5N2 continues to spread in U.S. Midwest

H5N2 avian influenza has now been confirmed on 22 turkey operations in Minnesota. Several states previously unaffected by the virus have reported positive flocks, including North Dakota and Iowa. Wisconsin has also reported the virus on a commercial layer farm, the first H5N2 case in chickens in the U.S. >> Read full article

Biosecurity Advisory: Risk from Wild Birds

Because of the increased risk of AI transmission this year, it is extremely important for poultry producers to minimize the risk of introducing fecal material from wild birds into poultry operations. The AI virus can survive for extended periods of time in the environment, particularly in cool weather. With planting season fast approaching, it is important to realize that tilling and planting equipment will cover every inch of fields that may have been contaminated by wild birds. This equipment should be kept away from poultry barns and from driveways serving poultry premises. >> Read full article

UofG researchers create tool to predict avian influenza outbreaks

U of G researchers devised a real-time way to analyze chickens and other farm birds for avian flu. The tool uses a small blood sample and relies on a simple chemical colour change to see not only whether a chicken has avian flu but also what viral strain is involved. So far, the tool can only detect the strains of H5N1 and H1N1. >> Read full article
