Poultry Science Cluster Receives AAFC Funding
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has approved up to
$ 1.54 million in funding for the formation of a Canadian Poultry Science Cluster under the Canadian Agri-Science Clusters Initiative. The funding will support a "cluster" of research scientists working at 10 facilities across Canada, and one in Scotland.
May 14, 2010 – Agriculture and
Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) has approved up to $1.54 million in funding for the
formation of a Canadian Poultry Science Cluster under the Canadian
Agri-Science Clusters Initiative . The funding will support a "cluster"
of research scientists working at ten facilities across Canada, and one
in Scotland.
An application for funding was submitted to AAFC by the Canadian Poultry Research Council (CPRC) on behalf of Canada’s poultry sector to the Canadian Agri-Science Clusters Initiative.
The research budget for the cluster totals more than
$3 million over three years (2010-2012). AAFC funding has been approved for up to
$1,545,053 for general research, plus an additional amount of up to $272,539 to support AAFC
collaborative researchers and operation of the cluster (just over $1.8 million
total). Balance of the remaining funds will come from other government sources (up
to $564,580), industry ($809,462 – $509,669 of this from CPRC) and
other sources (up to $37,500).
Final budget and contributions are
subject to signed contribution agreements.

Research is focused on three main themes:
1. Pathogenesis and control of enteric bacterial diseases of poultry
2. Understanding the biology and control of avian influenza virus in poultry
3. Addressing issues of bird welfare
