Jan. 25, 2008, Regina Beach – The Canadian Poultry and Egg Processors Council (CPEPC) has confirmed that the cleaning and disinfecting (C&D) of the breeder farm near Regina Beach has been completed and will be approved by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) today.
This means that barring another incident, Canada will be able to declare itself AI-free by the end of April, and the 90-day trade ban is lifted.
The
Saskatchewan Poultry Industry Emergency Management Team (SPIEMPT)
coordinated a $100,000 payment from the provincial industry to assist
in the C&D effort but the producer estimates the total cost will be
over twice that.
The CPEPC said that it is their understanding that Japan has let
Canada’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Brian Evans, know that they will rescind their trade
bans without waiting for the 90 day clock to expire. CPEPC will forward
the official notice when they receive it. Hopefully this decision by
Japan will spark similar reactions from other trading nations.
