Remembering a B.C. poultry leader

Stewart Paulson devoted his life to serving the poultry industry.

Stewart Paulson passed away peacefully at home on August 12, 2020. Stewart obtained his BSc and MSc (1970) from the UBC Department of Poultry Science under the supervision of the late Dr. Bob Roberts, and continued his graduate education at UC Davis.

Upon his return to Canada, he joined the poultry department of Agriculture Canada in Ottawa. Subsequently, he was an industrial market researcher for Cominco in Vancouver, and for five years, had his own consulting company.

He then worked as the Poultry Industry Specialist for the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture. In this position, he became an effective liaison between the provincial government, UBC, and the B.C. poultry industry.

He spearheaded the formation of the B.C. Sustainable Poultry Farming Group and later, to counter the avian influenza epidemic, designed a biosecurity and insurance policy for the industry to implement.

Among his proud achievements, he established the UBC Specialty Birds Research Fund with funding support from BCMAF. Stewart devoted his life to serving the poultry industry in British Columbia.
