An outbreak of highly contagious avian flu among birds in Kalamazoo, Mich., has triggered alerts and enhanced safety measures at poultry operations 220 kilometres to the east in Essex County.
Recent cases, including in December in Newfoundland and Labrador, have been linked to wild birds, and the CFIA warns that the latest strain of bird flu is spreading across the globe in flocks that migrate to and from Canada.
