Funding boosts Sask. poultry processing

Federal investment will support processing upgrades and expansion as part of a broader push to strengthen Saskatchewan’s agri-food sector.

Photo: © Evgeniy Kalinovskiy / Adobe Stock The federal government is investing more than $10 million in nine Saskatchewan projects aimed at expanding food processing capacity, adopting new technologies and strengthening access to domestic and international markets.
The funding, provided through Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan), was announced at Ag in Motion near Langham, Sask., and includes support for meat and poultry processing projects.
Prairie Meats Inc. is among the companies receiving support. The Saskatoon-based processor will use federal funding to upgrade its facilities and production systems to meet Canadian Food Inspection Agency licensing requirements under the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations. The upgrades are expected to allow the company to increase processing capacity and expand distribution.
North 49 Foods Ltd. will also receive funding to expand its production floor and install new detection and packaging equipment, increasing processing capacity.
Federal officials said the broader investment is intended to help Saskatchewan food processors scale up operations, improve productivity and reach new markets.
Funding will also support organizations including the Global Institute for Food Security and the Global Agri-Food Advancement Partnership for projects involving genomics, biomanufacturing and other agri-food technologies.
