The Feather Board Command Centre (FBCC) has confirmed multiple outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Ontario, with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) reporting cases on eight poultry premises as of February 11, 2025.
Current situation
The affected premises are located in Strathroy-Caradoc, Oxford County, Middlesex County, Wellington County, and the Town of Strathroy. These cases involve the H5N1 strain, a subtype known for its high transmissibility and severe impact on poultry populations.
In response, CFIA has established primary control zones (PCZs) around each infected premises. These zones enforce movement control measures, requiring permits for the transport of birds, equipment, and other materials in and out of the designated areas. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, adjusting control measures as affected sites progress through the disease containment and eradication process.
Across Canada, 38 active cases of HPAI have been reported in poultry flocks, with four detections in the past month. Meanwhile, the United States has recorded 149 cases in the same period.
Biosecurity remains critical
FBCC is urging all poultry farmers and industry stakeholders to adhere to stringent biosecurity protocols to prevent further spread of the virus. Farmers must ensure that all personnel on their premises use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow heightened sanitation and entry protocols.
Resources on avian influenza, biosecurity best practices, and disease symptoms are available through the Poultry Industry Council. Additionally, farmers are encouraged to report any sick or dead wild birds to the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative at 1-866-673-4781 or via their online reporting tool.
Staying informed
FBCC continues to work closely with CFIA and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) to support business continuity within the poultry sector.
