Poultry farmers urged to maintain strict biosecurity as new cases are identified

KINGSTON, Ont. – The Feather Board Command Centre (FBCC) has issued updates on Infectious Laryngotracheitis (ILT) biosecurity advisories for various Ontario regions.

As of September 6, 2024, the heightened biosecurity advisories for Kingston and Belleville have been stood down. These advisories were originally issued on June 11 and July 18, 2024, respectively. Despite the stand-down, FBCC continues to encourage poultry farmers, small flock growers, and industry personnel across the province to rigorously adhere to heightened biosecurity practices as efforts to recover from Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) persist.

Meanwhile, a new ILT biosecurity advisory has been issued for a 10 km area within the Municipality of Trent Lakes as of September 10, 2024, following a positive test result from a small flock in the region. The advisory is expected to remain in effect until mid-October.

ILT is a highly contagious respiratory disease primarily affecting chickens, with symptoms including increased mortality, noisy breathing, head-shaking, decreased egg production, and conjunctivitis. Farmers in Trent Lakes are urged to strictly reinforce biosecurity protocols, avoid non-essential contact with poultry, and ensure clean protective gear is worn by all personnel entering production sites.
