Programs offers $20,000 in grants to support local heroes combatting food insecurity.

To commence the holiday season, Think Turkey is shining a spotlight on underappreciated heroes of the holidays with the introduction of the inaugural Wishbone Awards.

With Food Banks Canada revealing that nearly 20 per cent of Canadians are grappling with food insecurity, the Wishbone Awards will acknowledge and support community champions who strive to provide holiday meals for those who are in need.

According to Darren Ference, Chair of the Turkey Farmers of Canada, “Whether it involves donating turkeys, cooking in a community kitchen, or volunteering at a local food bank, there are compassionate individuals across the nation who step up and support their communities every holiday season. The Wishbone Awards will pay tribute to eight individuals who embody the holiday spirit and consistently serve their communities during this festive time.”

From November 2 to November 15, 2023, individuals are cordially invited to visit ThinkTurkey.ca/Wishbone to nominate and share the story of a local hero in their community.

Renowned Canadian chef, TV personality, and ambassador of the Wishbone Awards, Chuck Hughes, expressed his enthusiasm for initiatives that combat food insecurity, stating, “As a chef, I hold initiatives that help eradicate food insecurity close to my heart. I am proud to collaborate with Think Turkey for the Wishbone Awards, as it allows us to shine a light on community heroes who genuinely brighten the holidays for those in need.”

On December 5, eight exceptional individuals will be honored with a Wishbone Award. In addition, recipients will receive a $2,500 grant to support their holiday community endeavors and have their stories shared nationwide to inspire others to give back.

Mark Hubert, President and CEO of Canadian Poultry and Egg Processors, expressed his hopes that the Wishbone Awards will ignite the holiday spirit among Canadians and serve as a reminder that by joining forces, more holiday wishes can be fulfilled.

The Wishbone Awards form part of The Wishbone Project, a charitable initiative launched in 2020 by Canada’s turkey farmers and processors to give back to communities and assist those in need at the local, provincial, and national levels through the provision of food and funds.
